Verdict

NotebookLM is for a packet you chose. Perplexity is for the web. Elicit is for papers you have not gathered yet. ChatGPT is the general chat that will happily ignore your fence. Upload only what the room is allowed to see. Ask a question you can falsify against the PDF. If the answer cites nothing you uploaded, throw it away. Confirm sharing on the notebook before you invite a class or a client. Ask a question whose answer you already highlighted in the PDF. If NotebookLM misses it, do not trust it on the parts you have not read. The fence only helps if you check the gate.

Question to a cited sketch of the web. Open two sources before you believe it.

• Narrow web questions that need links
• First sketches of a topic you will verify
• People who will open citations

• Fast sketch if you verify

• Still wrong with a footnote
• Easy to stop at the summary

Verdict

Perplexity is the default cited-web sketch. You.com stays only if it wins your bake-off. Elicit, Consensus, and NotebookLM own other corpora. Use it to find what to read, then read. Do not paste a Perplexity paragraph into a filing. Re-run important queries when the news moves — yesterday’s citations are not a briefing. Confirm which mode you are in before you blame the product. Open two links or do not quote the answer. That rule sounds childish until the first time a confident footnote points at a page that does not say the thing. Perplexity is a sketch. You still ink it.
