What to know
Editorial notes based on the vendor's own documentation and public pricing, plus hands-on testing where a score or review is shown above. They describe fit for a job, not absolute quality.
Best for
- Security-sensitive teams that cannot send code to third-party clouds
- Organizations wanting a Copilot-style tool on their own hardware
- Platform teams that want to audit and extend their coding assistant
Not ideal for
- Solo developers who want zero infrastructure work
- Teams expecting frontier-model agent performance out of the box
- Companies without GPU capacity or ops support
Key features
- Self-hosted code completion that runs on consumer-grade GPUs
- Answer Engine and inline chat inside VS Code and JetBrains IDEs
- Repository, documentation and GitLab MR indexing as context
- Admin analytics, telemetry policy, LDAP and SSO controls
- Pochi agent that turns GitHub issues into pull requests
Pros
- Code never has to leave your network when self-hosted
- Free Community edition covers small teams up to five users
- Open source codebase allows auditing and customization
Cons
- Self-hosting means managing GPUs, models and upgrades
- Completion quality depends on the model you choose to run
- Agent features are newer and less mature than leading commercial agents
ToolifyNav verdict
Tabby is a strong pick for teams whose first requirement is keeping source code in-house. It delivers the Copilot essentials of completion, chat and repository-aware answers on self-managed hardware, with admin controls that matter in regulated environments and an open codebase that can be audited. The trade-off is that output quality tracks the model you host, and running GPUs is real work. Developers who simply want the most capable assistant with no setup will find hosted tools easier; privacy-first organizations get a credible, well-maintained option here.
About
About Tabby
Tabby, from TabbyML, is an open-source coding assistant designed to run on infrastructure a team controls. The server is self-contained, needs no external database or cloud service, exposes an OpenAPI interface for integration with cloud IDEs, and supports consumer-grade GPUs, which makes on-premises deployment realistic for smaller organizations as well as large ones.
Core features include context-aware code completion in the editor, an Answer Engine that responds to coding questions without leaving the IDE, and inline chat for edits and explanations. Context providers let admins index repositories, documentation and GitLab merge requests so answers reflect internal code. Answer Engine threads can be saved as shareable Pages, and REST APIs let teams feed in their own documentation. Admin features cover usage analytics, telemetry policies, LDAP authentication and, on higher tiers, SSO.
TabbyML has also introduced Pochi, an agent that can take GitHub issues, plan and execute tasks, and open pull requests with CI, lint and test results summarized in the sidebar. A hosted Tabby Cloud option bills by LLM token usage with free monthly credits, while tab completion is advertised as always free.
