Search-plus-chat front door. Modes matter; the wrong mode makes any engine look dumb. Teams often look elsewhere when they need: Paper tables (Elicit, Consensus); Implementation inside a repo (Cursor, Copilot).
Short answer
If You.com is not the right fit, start with Perplexity, Elicit, ChatGPT. Teams usually look elsewhere when they need Paper tables (Elicit, Consensus) or Implementation inside a repo (Cursor, Copilot).
People who want fast cited research answers and table-style follow-ups without signing up first · Desktop researchers who will click through source links and stay on Free for synthesis, not file upload

Where Perplexity is stronger
Diabetes lit query returned cited synthesis in ~7s with 24 sources (PMC/PubMed/Diabetes Care visible)
Follow-up rebuilt evidence into a comparison table in ~8s (30 sources) without dropping INTERFAST-2/EARLY caveats
Nature citation opened the real 12 June 2024 hybrid-work paper; usable anonymous/Incognito path with no signup
Where You.com still wins
Worth a side-by-side
Modes let you stop using it wrong
Notes
Perplexity’s Free/Incognito path gave a ~7s cited diabetes answer (24 sources), an ~8s table follow-up (30 sources), and a real Nature link open — with a soft Pro upsell and one English prompt answered in Chinese. Final rating: 4/5. Full review: https://toolifynav.com/blog/perplexity-review
Paper search and extraction tables for people running something like a systematic review.
Free to try; paid plans for heavier review volume
Why it is an alternative
Overlaps the same job as You.com, especially Evidence tables, not vibes.
Best for
Evidence tables, not vibes
Researchers who will write inclusion criteria
People extracting outcomes across a paper set
Where Elicit is stronger
Forces the work into a table you can audit
Closer to review practice than a chatbot
Where You.com still wins
Worth a side-by-side
Modes let you stop using it wrong
Notes
Elicit belongs on a research desk when the deliverable is a screened set of papers plus extracted fields. It does not belong there when you wanted a cited news brief or a chat with one PDF.
Consensus, SciSpace, Scite, and the graph tools each own a different slice of the same afternoon. Keep Elicit for the table. Confirm extraction quality on two papers you already know before you trust a 40-row export. If you will not write inclusion criteria, you will not get a systematic review — you will get a sorted hallucination.
General-purpose assistant for drafting, multimodal chat, and everyday knowledge work — not every specialized job.

Why it is an alternative
Overlaps the same job as You.com, especially Drafting and rubber-ducking across mixed knowledge work.
Best for
Drafting and rubber-ducking across mixed knowledge work
Multimodal chat when the seat includes it
Teams that will route specialized artifacts to specialized tools
Where ChatGPT is stronger
The default interface most people already know
Strong generalist quality
Huge ecosystem of patterns and GPTs
Where You.com still wins
Worth a side-by-side
Modes let you stop using it wrong
Notes
ChatGPT remains the default general assistant because the interface is familiar and the quality floor is high. It is the wrong default for a systematic review (Elicit), a cited news brief you will not verify (still verify, or use Perplexity and then verify), or a multi-file refactor (Cursor, Claude Code).
Claude is still the comparison for long, careful documents. Gemini is still the comparison when the work already lives in Google. Grok is still the comparison when you want xAI’s voice and X-shaped context. Pick ChatGPT as the hub, write down what must never be pasted into it, and buy the workspace tier if the hub is going to see company material.
People willing to run a monthly bake-off against Perplexity
Who should switch
Paper tables (Elicit, Consensus)
Implementation inside a repo (Cursor, Copilot)
