ChatCSV Review: 2/5 — Magic Link Never Arrived, Demo Upload Failed

I tried ChatCSV with email-only login and a 5-row CSV. The magic link never arrived, demo upload failed, and two queries produced no new visible result. Final rating: 2 out of 5.

ChatCSV Review: 2/5 — Magic Link Never Arrived, Demo Upload Failed

Final rating: 2 out of 5. Directory listing: ChatCSV on ToolifyNav.

I opened https://www.chatcsv.co on September 9, 2026 (UTC+8) to do a boring job: log in with email, upload a five-row CSV, ask one concrete question, then look at limits. I did not finish that job. That failure is the review.

Getting in

01 homepage

The homepage still sells spreadsheet-chat in plain language. Paste a file, ask questions, skip standing up a BI project. That pitch is clear.

It also says ChatCSV’s successor is Obvious, with a link out. The product feels sunset while the marketing copy still invites you in.

I used email login only. No Google. No GitHub. The UI said it sent a magic link that expires in 24 hours.

I checked Outlook Inbox. Empty of ChatCSV. I checked Junk Email. Same. A mailbox search for “chatcsv” returned no results.

I tried /login/email-password as a backup path. It was a 404. There was no password field on the login screen. Magic link was the only door I could see, and the mail never showed up.

Login status: not completed. Zero authenticated workspace. No assumption that a later email arrived after I stopped looking.

The demo upload

Before opening the site I wrote a tiny CSV at /workspace/review-chatcsv/sample.csv: five rows, columns id, date, amount, note. Coffee, lunch, snack, software, transit. Small on purpose.

The public /demo workspace opened with a Titanic dataset already loaded and a “what’s the data about” answer already on screen. That part is easy to understand. You land inside a working-looking chat without signing in.

I attached the sample CSV from the paperclip control. The UI showed a red error toast and reset to “0 files selected.” No file stuck. No progress bar that finished. No new dataset label with my filename.

I am not claiming anything about how ChatCSV handles that CSV. The upload failed in front of me. Metrics for this step: attempted uploads 1, successful uploads 0.

Queries that did not land

03 query result

The preloaded Titanic write-up named columns such as PassengerId, Survived, Pclass, Name, Sex, Age, SibSp, and Parch. Fine as a canned explanation of a canned table.

I sent: “How many passengers are in each passenger class?” The UI briefly showed “Stop generating,” then returned to the prior view. No new user message bubble I could point at. No new result card I could measure.

I sent a second query: “Which passenger class had the highest survival rate?” Same behavior. Generating flashed. Nothing new stayed.

Latency: not timed. There was nothing new to time. Authenticated CSV query success: 0. Public demo new-answer success in this session: 0 of 2 attempts.

I do not treat the old Titanic blurb as proof that a fresh question works. It was already there when I arrived.

Pricing observed

05 pricing or limit

The homepage FAQ says ChatCSV is free for everyone, and that after the Flatfile acquisition they went free. I did not see a numerical usage cap on the pages I opened.

I did not reach a signed-in billing page. I did not enter a card. I did not click a paid upgrade. Pricing claims here are FAQ copy only.

What kept it from a 5/5

The product may still work for someone whose magic link arrives and whose upload sticks. That is not what I got on this pass.

  • Magic link: 0 messages in Inbox or Junk during the check window.
  • Own-CSV upload on the public demo: failed (red toast, 0 files selected).
  • Two new demo queries: no visible new answer after “Stop generating.”
  • Positioning: the homepage treats ChatCSV as superseded by Obvious.

A free tool you cannot enter, and a demo that will not take your file, is not a 4/5 day. I scored the path I walked.

### Not tested

Authenticated workspace. Password login (route 404; no field shown). Successful upload of sample.csv. Answer correctness on my own data. Charts, export, sharing, team features, API, deletion/privacy controls, billing. Mobile. I do not assume the Titanic demo equals a working personal workflow. I do not assume Obvious replaces every ChatCSV feature.

Final rating

Readable demo shell. Clear “it’s free” FAQ. And I could not log in, could not upload my file, and could not get a new answer to land.

If ChatCSV is winding down into Obvious, say that louder on the login path. If it is still meant to work, the magic-link delivery and demo upload need to work on a cold try.

Final rating: 2 out of 5.
