Verdict

Aider is the terminal harness. Claude Code is the other one with a stronger Anthropic flavor. Cursor is the IDE. Copilot is the seat switch. Use Aider when git is already home. Review every commit message. Confirm which models you will pay for. If the team wants a window with a file tree and a chat, you wanted Cursor, and that is allowed. Stay in Aider when the diff is the conversation. Leave when the team needs a file tree and a chat pane. Confirm the model bill before you let it roam a monorepo overnight.

Best for

• Developers who want the agent inside the editor they ship from
• Multi-file refactors with a human on the diff
• Teams leaving autocomplete-only workflows

• Agent workflows that span the tree
• Fast on both greenfield and brownfield if you review

• Subscription cost at team scale
• Model quality still varies by task
• Vague prompts thrash the tree

Verdict

Cursor is the clearest AI coding environment for people who live in the editor and will read the diff. It is a bad political choice if the company will only pay for GitHub-native Copilot, and a bad technical choice if the repo cannot leave the building. Run the same ticket in Cursor and Windsurf before you standardize. Keep Copilot if procurement already decided. Keep Claude Code if the team thinks in a terminal. Confirm what is indexed, what is excluded, and what the current agent is allowed to touch — those settings are the product more than the splash page.
