Copilot rides in VS Code, JetBrains, Neovim, and the GitHub web UI. Most teams never migrate editors. They flip a seat switch and keep muscle memory. Day to day: gray-text for the function under the cursor, chat to explain a module, PR helpers when the work already lives on GitHub. The unit is usually a function or a small patch, not a product rewrite.
Multi-file migrations and “build the feature from a brief” jobs outgrow ghost text. That is when people open Cursor or Windsurf for a week and compare PR quality on the same ticket.
Enterprise buyers care about audit logs, content exclusion, and which models ride on which plan. Freelancers care whether suggestions feel faster than typing. Measure both.
If procurement already decided GitHub, this is the default. Fighting that for fashion is expensive.
Turn on content exclusion for secrets on day one, not after the first key in a suggestion. The seat switch is easy. The exclusion list is the actual security work.
