Use Claude Code when the team thinks in tasks and already likes Claude. Review like a PR. Confirm what the current binary is allowed to run. If nobody will look at the diff, you do not have an agent. Claude Code assumes a shell and a project directory. The mental model is “delegate a task,” not “accept autocomplete.” Good first experiments: a missing test suite around a legacy module, a config format migrated across packages, a changelog drafted from commits and then edited for honesty.
If designers pair on UI and need visual diffs, a full AI IDE is less friction. If policy forbids Anthropic tooling, stop before you invest muscle memory. Aider is the open, git-native cousin with model choice. Copilot is lightweight completion in the corporate IDE. Continue is open backends in VS Code. Cursor is the windowed agent IDE.
The agent will be confidently wrong in a language you do not read. Stay on the diff.
Terminal culture is a prerequisite, not a nice-to-have.
Start from a failing test, not from a vibe. An agent that cannot see red will paint the repo green in conversation only. The terminal is honest when the test command is. If you cannot name the test command, you are not ready to delegate.
